Educating the Youth through Prevention Services


Community Prevention Specialists at HACC provide substance abuse prevention to the community and schools of Northern New Mexico through grants from the federal and state government. They focus on:

  • -The importance of good health for our children and their future. 

  • -The youth are educated on how to make healthy choices for            

  •  themselves and their families.  

  • -Administer the Life Skills curriculum in the Espanola Middle School. 

    -CPS are involved in community efforts that provide opportunities for   

      youth:   

    • provide alcohol and drug free dances

    • conduct Synar Merchant Training (training merchants not to sell tobacco to youth under 18), 

    • sponsor youth to attend trainings that deal with living a drug free life.

Espanola Valley Concerned About Secondhand Smoke (EVCASS)

EVCASS is a community health initiative sponsored by New Mexico Department of Health/TUPAC. It is a coalition to educate the community of the dangers of spit tobacco, smoking tobacco and second hand smoking. The coalition is working with the city of Espanola to establish policy pertaining to second hand smoking. If you would like to learn more about EVCASS or would like to become involved you can contact the HACC office.

        La Vision del Valle Coalition

This coalition is designed and intended for community members from all sectors of the communities in Espanola and Pojoaque, along with the Pueblos of Pojoaque, Nambe, Santa Clara, San Juan, Tesuque, Picuris and San Idelfonso. 

The coalition:

  • Plays an active, effective role in prevention planning in our communities. 

  • Is committed to developing a comprehensive health plan.  

  • The Community Resource Directory lists services available in the community has been published through this coalitions efforts.  They are offered free to the community.  

This project and coalition are funded by United States Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.  If you would like to learn more about the coalition or would like to become involved, please contact Mary Thomas in our office.

After school Program

The Para Los Ninos after school program is available to children in the Pojoaque and Espanola (Sombrillo, Mountain View, and Chimayo) school districts. The program is funded by he U.S. Department of Education and 21st Century Grant. The goal of the program is to increase the reading and math levels of children. Teachers and teacher aides are available after school to help students with daily homework assignments. This is a great opportunity for students to obtain additional assistance with their homework in a safe and healthy learning environment.

UPCOMING MEETINGS/EVENTS:

·      HACC Regular Board Meeting- June 18, 2003 , @ 6 p.m. , Teen Center . (third         Wednesday, of every other month)

·       HACC Special Board Meeting- May 21, 2003, @ 6 p.m. , Teen Center .

·       LVDV- Next meeting, Thursday,  June 12, 2003, @ 12:00 pm at the Espanola Hospital,    Pinon Room.

·      Youth Coalition- Next meeting, May 2 6, 2003, @ 6pm at the Teen Center .

·      EVCASS/TUPAC – Next meeting, June 12, 2003 , @ 1:30 pm at the Espanola Public   Health Office.

 

GRANT & PROGRAM UPDATES:

·      TUPAC/EVCASS-.  EVCASS is currently in the process of a steering committee. EVCASS is continuing its education to community members, with a television,      radio and print campaign For more information please contact HACC .

·       LVDV/Drug Free Communities Support Program/Coalition: LVDV is currently revisiting the 5 year plan.  The May meeting was very informative and included a presentation by Michael Courtney.For more information please contact HACC .

·      Project Success- completion of 27 sessions with Project Success students and anticipates the completion of 36 more sessions by the end of May 30th. One-on-one continues.  For more information contact Shawna Chavez.

·      Youth Coalition- The youth coalition consists of 31 members.  YC is currently working on a raffle fundraiser and Spana Palooza which is scheduled for August.  For more information contact Shawna Chavez. 

·       Para Los Ninos-21st Century Community Learning Centers- We are planning a summer program at Chimayo and Pojoaque Elementary.  The exact dates will be determined by the end of May.  For more information contact Michael Chavez.

·      Black Tar Heroin- The Black Tar Heroin Project continues to meet monthly in Chimayo at the Elementary school on the third of each month at 7 pm . The community is making “Welcome to Chimayo” signs, collecting books for a community library, and talking about incorporation. For more information contact Mary Thomas.

·       Teen Center- We are currently exploring ideas for the Summer Teen Program, including open MFC nights and daytime dances. For more information please contact HACC .

·       E-Plaza Project- Students continue to make progress on their interviews and many will meet their goal of 10 interviews by the end of May.  The three Dulce stude4nts were replaced with a Coronado student from Lindrith, a Penasco student, and anther home student from Arroyo Seco.  An interview process, meeting/dinner is being planned for June 3.  Our new web-site domain is under construction.  The next quarterly meeting in July.      Other Trainings

Our funding sources usually direct the type of service or projects we provide to you.  There are a variety of services that HACC staff has provided throughout the years through various grants, therefore our staff has been trained in many different areas.  Upon request and flexibility of staff schedules we can offer technical assistance/training in the following areas: Cultural Awareness, Gang Prevention, Parenting and Team Building Trainings. Fees are based on a case by case situation.
